“I wasn’t more than a third of the way into Michael Koryta’s Last Words late one recent evening when I closed its covers and started browsing Netflix for silly sitcoms. I knew that before I put my head on the pillow I needed to shake the searing image of the book’s protagonist waking up drugged, naked and freezing, lost deep underground in the utter darkness of a vast cave — or risk having it show up in my dreams.”

The versatile Michael Koryta’s new thriller is an exercise in sustained creepy atmospherics…It’s a kind of “Twin Peaks” with stalactites. It’s also a good guilt-ridden-survivor yarn, about a man whose last words to his soon-to-be-murdered wife were not “I love you,” as he sometimes imagines, but a snotty put-down.
